  1. Pesto says:

    1) Some people naturally learn faster than others, but "slower" people who work hard can also become skilled at drawing. Talent means nothing if you don’t put the effort into it.

    2) Yes, drawing is a hobby. I like drawing human figures the most, but I used to draw a lot of animals when I was younger. There still a lot of techniques like perspective, lighting, etc. that I need to work.

    3) Start out drawing with different shapes and lines to develop control over your pencil. Draw from observation: people that you see in front of you, a photograph, etc. When drawing from observation, notice how lighting, perpective, proportion, etc. plays a role in how the it looks in front of you. Cartoons and other forms of stylization can be fun to draw, but you should stay away from that for now and focus on realism. Realism is the base for virtually all forms of art and you need experience in rendering real-life subjects before you start stylizing. Internalizing realism will help you reinforce whatever style you choice. Salvador Dali, Van Gogh, and Picasso all had foundations in realism before they focused their interests on other styles. Cartoonists such as Bill Watterson (Calvin and Hobbes), Herge, and Shigeru Mizuki (Yokai King) benefitted from studies in realism as well.

Learn to be able to take constructive criticism. By pointing what you do and did not do right, you can learn from your mistakes. More than anything else, continue to practice. It’s lots of time and dedication, so don’t give up.
